GFWC SCC Sun City Center HISTORY
We were dancing the Twist and the Watusi, John Glenn was orbiting the earth. Del Webb was carving Sun City Center out of the tomato fields, building and selling the first Sun City Center house, and The Sun City Center Womanís Club was born. The year was 1962.
On August 12, 1962, S. E. Clark, Activities Director of Del Webbís Sun City Center Development, invited every woman living in the new development to a tea, with the objective of acquainting the new neighbors and forming a Womanís Club. Each of the twenty-two ladies became totally involved in the new organization by becoming an officer or committee chairman. Monthly meetings were held and many social activities were planned. Hats and white gloves were the dress of the day. The community grew and so did the Womanís Club. There were one hundred and two members at the end of the first six months. Membership reached a high of four hundred women in the 1980s and 1990s.

The club became a Federated member of GFWC Florida Federation of Womenís Clubs on April 16, 1963, and a member of the General Federation of Womenís Clubs (GFWC) on May 3, 1963. The early years were spent welcoming newcomers and developing cultural, social and volunteer activities. A Womanís Chorus and a reading group were formed.

Today, GFWC Sun City Center Womanís Club members continue to address the most pressing needs of our community and our nation. As members of the largest volunteer organization in the world, we are proud of the part that we have played in making our community and our country the best it can be.
